What was the first book you remember picking and reading by yourself?
The Secret Garden.

What was the last book you read that made you say damn, that was a good book?

Snow Crash.

Is there an artist in your local community that you would recommend people check out?

Clara Woods.

What advice would you give someone just starting to send their work to journals?

I received my first journal publication (unpaid) after submitting to over 100. My first paid one after 200 submissions. I have eight accepted in total. This is after 30 years of writing, 12 years of making music, and 10 years of painting. I’ve read that the one thing that separates success from failure is persistence. I take this to heart.

Residing in the Susan Fleming family collection, curated by Lee Marx, David Cleofas Avila’s art has been priced by Ames Gallery, recognized by the National Arts and Disability Center at UCLA, published in Peatsmoke Journal, and graced the cover of Gabby & Min. David’s poetry has been published in Oddball Magazine, The Poetry Cove, twice at WILDsound Writing Festival, and is slated to be published at Flora Fiction.
