Blending Flash Fiction & Art

Interview with Joshua Duncan

Picture
What was the first book you remember picking and reading yourself?

When I was a kid I loved coffee table size picture books of art, nature and mythology themes. But the first book series I remember falling in love with was Clive Barker's Abarat series. His paintings pulled me in and I stayed for his poetic and direct style of writing.

What was the last book you read that made you say damn, that was a good book?

I've been reading graphic novels more lately. Recently read Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin and it was great.

Artist's Statement

My drawings are single-line, direct observation ink works that reflect the quiet intimacy of daily life as a husband, father, and active artist. Rooted in the immediacy of lived experience, each piece captures fleeting domestic moments with honesty and emotional clarity. These drawings function as visual journal entries—unfiltered, personal, and deeply human. Through them, I invite viewers to find beauty in the ordinary and to connect with the shared rhythms of home and family life.

This piece (NUNUM Summer 2025 cover art) is a quiet meditation on the rhythms of domestic life, drawn from my daily experiences as a husband and father. I aim to capture the fleeting, often overlooked moments that define intimacy and connection within the home.
Joshua Duncan is an active, independent artist based outside New Orleans. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Illustration from the Memphis College of Art in 2011. Deeply inspired by aesthetic moments that transcend time, Duncan seeks to create work that connects all of humanity through shared experience. His artistic practice spans a variety of styles and mediums, yet consistently aims to foster a sense of unity and introspection. Through his art, Duncan invites viewers to pause and reflect on the universal threads that bind us all.
