Interview with Mr. Young

What was the first book you remember picking up and reading by yourself?

I recall being enamoured with Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel. I read it over and over once I was able to figure out that words have meaning, stories have meaning. It tickled something inside young me; perhaps the underdog story was the attraction although at the time I likely did not understand it at that level.

Why write flash fiction?

Flash fiction, for me, is a disciplined way of formulating and conveying a message, a story, distilled down to its essential theme. It is a challenging medium, and a rewarding one when it clicks.

What advice would you give someone who is just starting to send their work out to journals?

Send it. Send it again. Send it again and again. It will be a boomerang, flying back unimpeded; it will be peeing over a waterfall, droplets lost in a rushing current; it will be shouting into a dark night, unheard, until one time a voice will answer. That voice is the reason you write, and send, and send again.

Mr. Young is a grossly overeducated boffin, mistakenly reputed to be clever, who tangles words into knots for pleasure, thinking this beats torturing those they love with random brainfarts. When not pounding out stories they can be found out in nature finding inspiration for life.
