Interview with Pravy Jha

What was the first book you remember picking up and reading by yourself?

One of the first books I remember reading on my own was Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. It was the first time I realized a book could make the world around me disappear for hours.

What writer(s) or which book(s) influenced your decision to become a writer?

I don't think there was a single book that made me want to write. Reading writers like Khaled Hosseini, Jane Austen, Rumi, and Khalil Gibran showed me how powerful stories and language could be, and gradually made writing feel possible.

Is there a writing craft book that you would recommend to new writers?

Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott. It's practical, encouraging, and reminds writers that uncertainty is a normal part of the process.

Is there a writer who has influenced your current writing style?

Khaled Hosseini has influenced me most. I admire the emotional depth of his work and the way he balances intimate personal stories with larger human themes.

Why write flash fiction?

I love flash fiction because it demands precision. Every sentence matters, and a very small space can still hold an entire world.

What advice would you give someone who is just starting to send their work out to journals?

Be patient and keep submitting. Rejections are part of the process for every writer. Focus on writing the next piece rather than dwelling on the last response.

What is a question you wish more people asked writers?

What are you excited about right now? Writers are often asked about inspiration and process, but I enjoy talking about the books, films, and stories that currently have my attention. Enthusiasm can be just as revealing as influence.

What is something outside of writing that influences your work?

Films. I love the way movies use images, pacing, and silence to tell a story. Watching films has taught me a lot about atmosphere, emotional impact, and how much can be communicated without explaining everything.

What keeps you returning to the page?

Curiosity. I often start with a question, an image, or a feeling that I can't quite shake. Writing is my way of exploring it and discovering where it might lead.
