Interview with Ceridwen Hall

Ceridwen gave the Summer 2022 issue a gem of a start with her piece 'The Decision' and lucky for us we were able to grab a bit of her time to find out a little more about this wonderful writer.

Let's get right to it, why write flash fiction?

I love how the compression and the distillation of flash fiction force me to recognize which details truly matter and what is actually happening in a given moment.

What advice would you give someone who is just starting to send their work out to journals?

Read journals so you can get a feel for what they are looking for. If possible, work as a reader/screener for a journal so you can get a better sense of how journals make decisions. Understand that rejection is part of the process and actively cultivate rejection resilience.

What outside of writing and reading inspires your writing?

Walking my dogs, knitting, baking, kayaking, and dishes (I know this is weird, but there is nothing like being up to your elbows in soapy water and unable to jot anything down to bring on the ideas).

Tell us about your job as a book coach.

I coach poetry and fiction writing. I love using my skills and experience to empower other writers as they hone their craft and prepare to share their work with the world. I can't think of anything more fulfilling than holding space and offering guidance for writers as they find their voices and their stories. Plus, it means lots of reading on the job!

What do your dogs think of your writing?

They want me to add bacon and squirrels to everything.
