Interview with Eugene Hyojoon Shin

Picture
Eugene Hyojoon Shin gifted us our Spring 2023 cover, Shackles of Tradition, which gave the issue such a unique purpose that it corralled everything else and swept it into a form we couldn't be prouder of for our first issue of the new year.

What was the first book you remember picking and reading by yourself?

The first book I remember reading that I picked by myself is Call of the Wild by Jack London.

What was the last book you read that made you say damn that was a good book?

Fahrenheit 451
and The Giver by Ray Bradbury and Lois Lowry, respectively.

Which artists have influenced your current artistic direction?

Many of my artists' inspirations have stemmed from multiple online illustrators.

Is there an artist in your local community that you would recommend people check out?
Charles Jang.
What advice would you give someone who is just starting to send their work out to journals?

People should pick works that they deem the best in their own eyes or ones that are their personal favourites.

How do you usually consume art from others? (e.g. museums, social media, comics, etc)

I like to use the internet to look at the works of others.

Was there anything hard about learning art?
In the past, it often felt like I was improving. I kept on practicing daily but it seemed like it had no effect.

Artist's Statement

Picture
Eugene Hyojoon Shin is a teenage artist living in Seoul, Korea. He has previously been recognized by the Scholastic art competition for several photographic works. He enjoys experimenting with various materials, and recently he is expanding his interest from photography to drawing, painting, and digital art. He hopes to express himself in diverse artistic ways continuously.

Eugene Hyojoon Shin is an aspiring artist from Korea. He has been practicing his artistic skills since elementary school when he wished to be a comic artist. Now, rather than just a comic artist, he wishes to work in other branches of entertainment by designing characters, backgrounds, props, and more. Although drawing is his main artistic skill, he has a keen interest in other forms of art, such as literature or music.
