Interview with Kim SeungJi

Let's get straight to it SeungJi, what was the last book you read that made you say damn that was a good book?

I read a book a few weeks ago called “The Metamorphosis” by Franz Kafka. After finishing the book, it struck me how inspiring the book was. Although the book was relatively short, I grasped various lessons and meaningful messages in the context of the novel. Reading this book provided me an opportunity to reflect on the true meaning of a family, the theme of isolation, and reflect on my values and behaviors in the capitalist society. I strongly recommend this book because this story is entertaining with the concept of the main character going through a metamorphosis into a vermin, and it also teaches you significant lessons.

Pen, pencil or phone which one do you reach for when you need to write something down?

When I need to write something down, I reach for my phone first. As an individual who lives in a modern society with advanced technology, it is the most convenient method to take notes on my phone. I always have my phone wherever I go and keep it close to me to have access to it at any time. Because it is quick and easy to take notes or erase anytime, my phone is the first thing I reach for when I have something to write down. I believe this applies to most people as people nowadays possess phones with them and rely on technology. Nevertheless, I still value taking notes with a pen or pencil as it allows me to memorize better by physically taking notes.

What advice would you give to someone who is just starting to send their work out to literary journals?

A piece of advice I would give is to ensure your work indeed shows all your ability and that it expresses yourself. Because there are various works from everyone, I believe it is significant that your work differs from others and is unique. One should ensure that their work is exceptional, fresh, and different from other standard works. Also, it is essential that your work exhibits your strength and showcases all of your abilities, appealing to the audience.

SeungJi Kim's work is inspired by what she sees in the everyday lives of her surroundings as well as what she personally experiences. As it is what we may experience in our daily lives, her works attempt to incorporate deep and surreal elements to intensify the significance we unconsciously tend to overlook. As a high school student, it is natural to be vulnerable to feelings and be overwhelmed with stress, eventually leading us to rely on something or someone. Because she is an individual who also underwent this process, she wanted to express the various forms of communicating our state in different ways and extents.

SeungJi Kim is currently a junior in Chadwick International

in Songdo, South Korea. As a passionate art student, she has been interested in exploring various forms of art and realized the art style she aims to pursue. She likes to utilize and manipulate mundane objects to capture unconscious behaviors of us we can relate to.
