Interview with Lucy Zhang

Lucy gifted our Summer 2022 issue with a little piece of perfection when she sent her words and her art our way in the form of 'Wing Selection'.

We were lucky enough to get a little of Lucy's time and yes you know by now how we got started.

Lucy, what was the first book you remember picking and reading by yourself?

Wow, I honestly don't remember. It must not have been that memorable :P

Not a worry. Okay then, what was the last book you read that made you say damn that was a good book?

From the New World by Yusuke Kishi.

A new one for my list, thank you. Which artists have influenced your current artistic direction?

Hajime Isayama, Sui Ishida, Chica Umino, and Yoshitoki Ōima.

Is there an artist in your local community that you would recommend people check out?

I don't know many local artists. I do, however, know many software engineers. They're everywhere, like weeds. I'm one of them.

What advice would you give someone who is just starting to send their work out to journals?

'Wing Selection' words and art by Lucy Zhang

Keep writing even while waiting for a response from a journal. Write as much as you can whenever you've got time. You've only got one short human life capable of telling the story of many many other lives.

How do you write while walking?

I discovered this was possible while trying to get in my exercise for the day and contemplating if I'd still have enough time to write after I got back from my walk. I decided to try tapping away on my phone while walking. The secret to not getting run over is to look up from your screen frequently unless you've got enough creative inspiration to churn out a whole paragraph in one go. In that case, maybe it's ok to meet your demise while storytelling.

Are you working on a novel?

Yes. I have no idea what I'm doing but there are words and pages and maybe a semblance of a story.
