Phebe Jewell brought one of her passions to our Summer 2019 issue and the result was 'Paroled', a wonderful spin of a flash that twists and turns just the way we love a story to when it hits NUMUM's pages.

Phebe Jewell's work appears or is forthcoming in Dime Show Review, Flash Fiction Magazine, MoonPark Review, The Airgonaut, and Sky Island Journal as well as other publications. A teacher at Seattle Central College, Phebe also volunteers for the Freedom Education Project Puget Sound, a nonprofit providing college courses for women in prison.

What is the first book you remember picking and reading by yourself?

I was an early reader and the youngest, so most likely the first book I picked up on my own and read was one of my sisters' books or perhaps something from the library.

Makes sense. Staying with books, what was the last book you read that made you say damn that was a good book?

Between Tommy Orange's novel There There or Jesmyn Ward's Sing, Unburied, Sing.

As an artist things pop in your head at the strangest times, pen, pencil or phone, which one do you reach for when you need to write something down?

In a pinch, when inspiration strikes and I've got to get words on the page before I forget them, pen and paper are my best friends.

What advice would you give someone who is just starting to send their work out to journals?

Advice for folks just starting out: Keep writing. Keep writing. Keep writing. Develop think skin and learn from any feedback you might receive from editors. Remember that editors receive more good work than they can publish. Keep writing. Keep sending work out. Read past and current issues of journals before you send out your stories to them to see if your style, subject matter, and voice are a good fit for their publication. Remember: you write because you love to write, because you have stories to tell only you can tell.
