Interview with Robyn Bashaw

What was the first book you remember picking and reading by yourself?

The book that comes to mind is the first in the Harry Potter series. I was growing up as they were being released, and we read them out loud as a family, but I remember stealing the copy away to read ahead on my own because I had to know what happened next!

​Is there a writing craft book that you would recommend to new writers?

We read a lot of different craft books in college, but the one I would have to recommend is Donna Tartt's The Secret History. It's a heavy epic, a far cry from flash, but I remember hearing how Donna Tartt writes once and is done, which is an incredible feat when you look out how interconnected her story runs. This is not how I write, but it's certainly how I aspire to write!

What advice would you give someone who is just starting to send their work out to journals?

My advice is two-fold: First, edit your piece. Editing is my least favorite part of the writing process, but it is necessary. Edit your piece before you send it out. Second, I recommend you apply with abandon. You will receive many rejection letters along the way, but you must continue to apply to find the perfect home for your piece.
