The art of Scarlett Weissman

Penumbra (noun) - the partially shaded outer region of the shadow cast by an oblique object; a shadowy, indefinite, marginal area; the transitional space denoting the transfiguration of conditions.

This series began as a basic exploration into a simple concept. Having hit a bit of a conceptual wall in my work, I decided to strip down my process in order to explore some new techniques.

gradient of light and dark into a complex gradient of may colors. But, as I generated these color fields, a reoccurring  phenomena began  to take place. Well into the work a figure would emerge, entirely ephemeral, suggested only in the contrast between many layers of color, yet deeply engrained in my perception of it. So I began to give form to these figures, these people who emerged from nothing.

And I began to look into where they were coming from,

what was causing their emergence in my perception with such consistency. And then I found the answer.

Scarlett Weissman is an emerging multimedia artist working

out of Bridgeport, CT. Scarlett’s artistic journey has been largely defined by their unconventional style, which itself stems from the fact that they’re almost entirely self-trained. Aside from a few years spent studying architecture at the Pratt Institute, Scarlett has never received any formal training in the arts. Their work currently focuses on utilizing non traditional techniques to find new ways of exploring the human experience.
